Women's Bespoke

Tailoring for women, properly

Suiting, dresses and separates cut to your shape. A third of everything we make is womenswear, and it is not an afterthought.

Why it is different

Off the rack, you buy for your largest measurement and pay to take in the rest.

That is why so many women own clothes that fit properly in exactly one place. We measure bust, waist and hip separately, and cut to all three — which is the entire difference between a garment that hangs and a garment that fits.

What we make

Six things, cut to your measurements

Occasion and evening

Dresses for the days that get photographed

A wedding you are attending rather than getting married at. A matric dance. An awards evening or a year-end function you will see pictures of for years.

Cut to your measurements in three to four weeks, in whatever cloth you choose — plain, printed, or embellished by hand.

How long it takes

It depends on what it is

Beading is done by hand, which is the whole reason a beaded gown takes six times as long as a suit. If you are working to a date, tell us at the consultation.

Bridal

We make wedding dresses, and we alter them

A gown made from scratch to your measurements, or a dress bought elsewhere brought to fit properly. Both are ordinary work here.

The heaviest we have made was a mesh chiffon dress hand-beaded until it weighed seventeen kilograms, with a matching beaded suit for the groom. That is the upper end of what this workshop will take on.

What it costs

Three things set the price

  • Fabric

Sourced from around the world, and usually the largest single cost.

  • Technicality

How hard the garment is to draft, cut and construct.

  • Embellishment

Beading and handwork are counted in hours, not metres.

A plain sheath and a hand-beaded gown are the same craft and nowhere near the same price. We quote at the consultation, before anything is cut.

Questions

Before you book

How long does a bespoke dress take?

It depends entirely on what it is. Suiting and separates take five to seven days. An evening or matric dance dress takes three to four weeks. A beaded gown takes four to six weeks, because the beading is done by hand.

What does womenswear cost at Flux?

Three things set the price: the fabric, the technical difficulty of the garment, and how much embellishment it carries. A plain sheath and a hand-beaded gown are the same craft and nowhere near the same price. We quote at the consultation, before anything is cut.

Do you make wedding dresses, or only alter them?

Both. We make wedding dresses from scratch and we alter gowns bought elsewhere. The heaviest we have made was a mesh chiffon dress hand-beaded to seventeen kilograms, with a matching beaded suit for the groom.

I am between sizes everywhere. Is bespoke actually different?

That is the whole point of it. Off the rack you buy for your largest measurement and pay to take in the rest, which is why so many women own clothes that fit in one place. We measure bust, waist and hip separately and cut to all three.
